What is an audiology evaluation?

In order for your child to be able to hear, it is important to get an exact diagnosis. It is only natural to worry about an unknown process, but the hearing tests are neither painful nor distressing for your child. In fact, many steps are very playful and engaging and involve lots of toys. It will feel just like playtime for your child! Here is a short overview of the tests that are commonly performed with young children:

Otoscopic examination: Checks the health of your child’s ear canal and eardrum using a special lighted instrument called an otoscope.

Tympanometry: Helps measure how well the eardrum is working and can identify any fluid build-up behind the eardrum.

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test: Measures sound waves produced in the inner ear.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Test: Evaluates how the hearing nerve responds to sound and is usually done for babies and young children who can't take regular hearing tests yet. Your child won't feel anything during the test.

Pure-Tone Audiometry: Assesses the softest sound your child can hear at different frequencies.
